The global New Year,2024,New York City, Sydney, Australia, Philippines,London, England,, Brazil..
At the beginning of 2024, when the ball drops in Times Square, New York City, it will actually be late – many countries around the world will have already welcomed the new year.
In the Central Pacific, the island nation of Kiribati, specifically Christmas Island, was the first country to pop champagne for 2024. This happened on the morning of December 31 in the United States, at 5 a.m., and 11 a.m. UTC (Coordinated Universal Time).
Following them, New Year celebrations rolled through Chatham Islands in New Zealand at 5:15 ET, and then the rest of New Zealand, Tokelau, Samoa, Tonga, some of Kiribati’s Phoenix Islands, and certain regions of Antarctica at 6 a.m.
As the day progresses, moving to the other side of the international date line, Hawaii, American Samoa, and many islands beyond the Americas will join the festivities for the last moments of welcoming the new year. They will have to wait until Monday morning (local time) for the Toast to 2024.
In New York,
on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, people gathered in Times Square to see the numerical representations of the new year displayed for the New Year’s Eve celebrations. Authorities are preparing for the New Year’s Eve celebrations in Times Square and throughout America as the Israel-Hamas conflict has presented heightened threats.
Overall, there are 39 different local time zones in use worldwide – some neighboring zones have a difference of 15 or 30 minutes. This includes two zones ahead of UTC, meaning it takes a total of 26 hours to cover them all. The world wishes each other a Happy New Year as it rotates through these time zones.
So, if you really, really, really enjoy humming “Auld Lang Syne,” the list below will take you through the jubilation repeatedly as the day unfolds.
